How much should I pay for carpet and install?

I’m trying to hire someone to install carpeting in my basement (about 1100 sq. feet). The job would include removal of existing carpet.

I was quoted for a supposed midrange carpet (polyester type with 32 oz weight per sq foot – whatever that means) 00 for the whole thing – is that a good quote? If not, how much can I expect to pay by breakdown (carpet, install, padding, removal)

Thanks greatly appreciated!
I will leave a best answer for your effort!

For that square ft, it is good.

That sounds like a fair price for the material you describe. Most flooring companies prefer to work from a fixed price for material and installation. There are many reasons for that, and as long as the price seems fair, and the installer has a good reputation, your best bet is probably to accept the proposal.

Having said that, here are a couple of suggestions: 1) Ask for 3 references. They can be homeowners, but contractors are even better – they will have more experience with flooring installers in general. 2) Insist on getting a Certificate of Insurance from the installer’s insurance agent. Don’t accept a copy that the installer hands you – it could be phony. The company must be insured for liability and Workers Compensation, at a minimum.
