How to protect carpet while transporting garbage cans?

I stay in a townhouse that does not have a garage. I have to transport my garbage cans from the backyard through my living room out the front door to the curb for trash collection. and vice versa.

My carpet always get dirty from whatever debris is stuck to the garbage can, even if I lift it up.

Leaving garbage cans outside the house is an HOA no-no and leaving the garbage cans near the front door in my house is an aesthetic & smell no-no.

What can I do and rig up to prevent my carpet from getting dirty?

Buy a tarp that is just the right size. It will be durable and you can reuse it over and over again. You can get the at any hardware store like Lowe’s or The Home Depot or even WalMart.

You go to Home Depot and buy a roll of plastic sheeting. It sticks to the carpet, then peels right up after you have rolled out you garbage cans.

Perhaps you could get a dolly (two-wheeled load carrier), and bolt a sheet of plywood to the bottom, the part where the can would sit. This would keep most stuff from coming off the can, if the plywood is as big as the can bottom.
