All about Green Beans

Walk down the vegetable aisle at any grocery store, and you have many choices of green beans. There are French cut, Italian style, green beans with potatoes and even just cut ones. Green beans are one of the favorite vegetables for a side dish to any meal. They grow on a vine and are usually green in color on the outside and have little beans on the inside. Some people call green beans pole beans.

Fresh green beans are sweeter in taste than canned ones. That is because when they are canned salt is added and takes away that sweet taste. If you walk down the produce aisle, you can just grab a handful and add them to your cart. Of course, the best green bean is the one you pick straight from the garden.
Beans have been grown in this country for a very long time. The Indians used to grow them in the fields with their corn.

When purchasing green beans, make sure they are green in color and not brown and speckled. Be sure to thoroughly wash them before cooking them. Also, a fresh green bean is usually very crisp. When you go to prepare them for cooking, snap off the ends and depending on size you might want to snap them in half. The beans should make a snapping sound when doing this, if they don’t they really aren’t very fresh.

Cooking beans doesn’t take very long. You can sauté them in some oil or you can steam them on the stove. Whichever way you choose to cook them, the beans should be sweet, bright green in color and crisp. After cooking them, the beans should maintain their color and shape and not be soft and wilted.
One of the best meals is some kind of meat, a potato and some green beans on the side. They can be used in stews, vegetable soup and even in a casserole. Green bean casserole is an easy dish to make and is wonderful during the holidays or at a family gathering.

Fresh beans don’t last much longer than just a week or two. Try to only purchase what you can use. But if your eyes overload your stomach, they can be blanched and stored in freezer bags after they dry to be used at a later date.
Green beans are a very healthy vegetable for everyone. They are full of protein, calcium, iron, and vitamins A and C. They also don’t have many carbohydrates, so people with diabetes don’t have to worry about their blood sugar.

Even though the story of Jack and the Beanstalk doesn’t really tell you what kind of beans he bough. It’s nice to think he was making a conscious choice and went for the green ones.

How to get from the bus station to the boats.?

We plan to take one of the cruises from Vancouver to Alaska. Coming from the east coast of the US, we are thinking of taking the train to Seattle, WA and then the bus to Vancouver. I suspect this dumps you in the middle of town, so what’s the best way to get to the boats? About how far is it and how much would it cost by either mass transport or taxi?
