How to protect carpet while transporting garbage cans?

I stay in a townhouse that does not have a garage. I have to transport my garbage cans from the backyard through my living room out the front door to the curb for trash collection. and vice versa.

My carpet always get dirty from whatever debris is stuck to the garbage can, even if I lift it up.

Leaving garbage cans outside the house is an HOA no-no and leaving the garbage cans near the front door in my house is an aesthetic & smell no-no.

What can I do and rig up to prevent my carpet from getting dirty?
